Hokulia raises more than $3M for Kona charities
Hokulia announced that it has raised more than $3 million for local charities and nonprofits over the past six years through “Community Play” events at its private, Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course. Hokulia’s Community Play program provides an opportunity each month for a local charity to hold a fundraising golf tournament. All proceeds from these tournaments go directly to the beneficiary organizations.
“Participating in the Community Play program has raised more than $1.25 million for the Kona Community Hospital — funding that has helped us continue to provide vital health care to the region,” said Cheryl Holdcroft, Kona Hospital Foundation development director. “We feel very fortunate to have a neighbor like Hokulia that offers Kona nonprofits a great opportunity to raise funds for a wide range of community needs.”
The Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s food bank, is the most recent nonprofit to benefit from the Community Play program. It was the February Community Play beneficiary charity this year that raised more than $40,000 in support of its operations.
Overall, Hokulia’s Community Play program has raised more than $3 million for local charities over the past six years. Beneficiaries use the funds raised for a range of needs. The following are some of the charities and the amounts they raised through their participation in the program: American Red Cross, $136,950; Food Basket, $124,728; Hawaii Island United Way, $129,500; Hualalai Academy, $160,173; June Jones Foundation, $343,000; Kona Community Hospital, $1,294,000; Kona Family YMCA, $217,585; Hawaii State Junior Golf Association, $194,785; and Ellison Onizuka Foundation, $215,144.
“We feel privileged to be able to help raise significant amounts of money for important local charities, and we are delighted to be able to give back to our community this way,” said John De Fries, chief executive officer of Hokulia. “Throughout the year hundreds of citizen — volunteers and participants — join our Hokulia staff to make this fundraising program a success.”
